Looking Forward to Spring

Nine Decades of Popular Music in Taiwan

National Museum of Taiwan History

2023.09.06 - 2023.11.12

When we listen to "Wang Chun Feng," what are we truly anticipating? This is not just the story of a song; it is a microcosm of modern Taiwanese culture. This exhibition takes "Wang Chun Feng" as its central theme, tracing the evolution of this song since its first recording in 1933. At that time, it quickly became a popular tune, later extending into musical dramas, records, films, and other forms, continuously being reinterpreted through the changing times. After the war, almost every renowned singer reinterpreted this song, with countless versions emerging. Through the transmission, performance, and interpretations of "Wang Chun Feng," we can glimpse the interaction between creators, singers, and listeners, as well as the rich cultural pulse of that era.

The exhibition uses "recording" as its core concept, with a recording room in the center that features instruments from different eras, surrounded by displays of various versions of "Wang Chun Feng" recordings and lyrics. Display cabinets are designed in the shape of a recording studio control panel, symbolizing how this song has been reworked and reimagined in different historical contexts. The exhibition route follows a chronological order, guiding visitors through a musical journey that revisits Taiwan's history: from the love stories of the Japanese colonial period, to wartime struggles, economic booms, democratic movements, and debates about national identity. We have selected seven stylistically distinct versions of "Wang Chun Feng," using directional speakers and animated soundtracks to create the experience of walking along the grooves of a vinyl record, immersing visitors in the evolving melodies of the song. At the end, visitors are brought back to the original version of "Wang Chun Feng," inviting them to reflect: after experiencing this musical journey, do they now perceive the song's history differently?

Additionally, the exhibition incorporates contemporary AI technology, with virtual performances of early singers being projected at set times in the recording room. We intentionally retain the slightly patchy quality typical of AI-generated animations, using this imperfect style to reconstruct the public's memory of beloved stars. These images, existing in a space between reality and imagination, evoke a sense of nostalgia while also adding a touch of modernity. This unique presentation not only brings a classic back to life but also offers visitors a chance to experience the fascinating interplay between technology and cultural memory.
