Splendors of the Biblioteca Apostolic Vaticana and
Rare Books from the Ming and Qing Imperial Libraries

National Palace Museum

2023.03.11-2023.07.16

For the first time, the National Palace Museum is simultaneously exhibiting rare ancient books from the Eastern "Imperial Court" and the Western "Holy See," inviting visitors to explore the fusion and dialogue between Eastern and Western cultures through this special exhibition. The exhibition looks back over 300 years of similarities and differences in the book-collecting traditions of these two great civilizations. The exhibition design centers around the concept of a "library," transforming the exhibition space into an ancient book pavilion, where visitors can feel as if they are stepping into a sea of books, immersed in scholarly treasures. Each bookshelf serves as a hub of wisdom, housing the lifelong dedication and worldview of scholars, conveying ideas through the medium of books. The exhibition unfolds in layers, showcasing how these ancient books have preserved and organized human knowledge and memory, encapsulating the vast world within, and revealing a rich cultural and intellectual heritage.
